Mother’s Day Prayer Litany
LEADER: Holy God, we give you thanks for the ways in which you provide for us. You have surrounded us with the love of your Holy Spirit in the community of faith. We are grateful for your loving-kindness that endures forever. Today, Lord, we are particularly thankful for the ways in which you nurture and care for us through mothers and the women you’ve placed in our lives. We joyfully lift up our hearts to you in prayer.
LEADER: We praise you for our mothers, grandmothers,
and the women who have raised and sacrificed for us.
ALL: Thank you, Holy God, for your steadfast love.
L: We praise you for the gift of family and the household of God.
A: Thank you, Holy God, for your steadfast love.
L: We praise you for the gift of spiritual mothers and those who have led us in faith.
A: Thank you, Holy God, for your steadfast love.
L: We praise you for strong, faithful women who lift up
the name of Jesus through their words and deeds.
A: Thank you, Holy God, for your steadfast love.
L: We take a moment of prayer in gratitude to speak out loud the names of our mothers and women you’ve placed in our lives.
-Pause for spoken prayer-
L: Holy God, while we are filled with gratitude we also acknowledge that our world is broken by sin. We live with strained relationships and experience the pain of loss and grief, yet have confidence that your Holy Spirit is working to make all things new. We lift up before you:
L: Individuals who have lost their mothers and long to be reunited with loved ones.
A: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
L: Families who are estranged or relationally separated from their mothers.
A: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
L: Children who have experienced abuse or pain at the hands of their mother.
A: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
L: Mothers and families who have suffered the loss of children.
A: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
L: Women who long to become mothers, but have been unable to fulfill that desire.
A: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
L: We take a moment of silent prayer to name the places of pain in our lives and to rest in your loving embrace. We trust that you hear and answer us when we pray.
-Pause for silent prayer-
L: Loving God, you are perfect toward us and always guide us gently for the restoration of our souls. You have led us into the family of God, adopted us as your children, and given us a new identity as spiritual family in Christ. We are confident that goodness and mercy will follow us all of our days and that we will dwell securely in your household for all eternity. Thank you for the gift of mothers. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
